Prominent Educator Was Historic Preservationist, Civic Volunteer
Sara Miller Secor died Monday, March 17, 2003, following a courageous battle
with cancer.
She was an artist, educator, historic preservationist and civic volunteer.
After graduating from Chattanooga City High School and attending
Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., for two years, she graduated from the
University of Chattanooga with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in
English with the last University of Chattanooga graduating class. She
did post-graduate studies in special education.
During 10 years as a special education teacher with the Chattanooga school
system, she helped many educationally challenged students develop the skills
and job experience they needed to become productive, employed, contributing
members of the Chattanooga community.
Many of her students landed employment that paid them far more than the city
paid her as a teacher.
Even many years after she retired, her students looked her up to thank her
for the education she provided them.
Following her tenure as a teacher, she worked with Landmarks of Chattanooga,
the local historical preservation society, first as a volunteer and board
member and later as the executive director.
Through her efforts and the leadership of Robert McGuff, BlueCross
BlueShield of Tennessee renovated and restored the former Miller Bros.
Department Store building on Seventh Street between Market and Broad streets
to its original elegance.
She worked with others in the Fort Wood preservation activities.
As a volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce, she served as chairman of the
Area Beautification Committee, during which time the committee determined
that the Bachman, McCallie and Stringer's Ridge tunnels belonged to the
state of Tennessee. With Sara's leadership and the assistance of
Chamber President Ruth Holmberg, the state cleaned up and refurbished the
three tunnels.
Sara and Marsha Yessick teamed up to design and launch the annual catering
to the Chattanooga Boys Choir event, which is a fund-raiser for scholarships
for talented students whose families could not afford the tuition to the
Chattanooga Boys Choir.
She was a founding member of the Scenic City Optimist Club and was named
Optimist of the Year in 1999. As an Optimist she helped the club raise funds
for activities to help young people, including the students at Bethel Bible
Village.
Although little known except by her close friends and family, Sara was an
accomplished artist. Her friends held a one-women show for her in November
2002. When cancer made it impossible for her to paint in oils, a medium in
which she excelled, she turned to acrylics and developed a whole new style.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Ralph Montgomery Miller
and Geraldine Henson Miller.
She is survived by her husband, Albert W. Secor; brother, William Henson
Miller, and his wife, Xochitl R. Miller, and their two children, Ashley L.
Miller and William Henson Miller Jr.; her uncles, Bobby Miller, and his
wife, Jo Ann, and W.A. Miller, and his wife, Betty; her aunt, Rosalie M.
Goldston; and several cousins.
A celebration of her life festival will be announced at a later date.
A family-only memorial service will be held.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by J. Avery Bryan.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Chattanooga Boys Choir
or Bethel Bible Village.

Daniel Cleland Turner, 62, of Harrison, died on Friday, February 19, 2010, after fighting a long battle with health issues caused by strokes. His loving wife Anita Turner
was there by his side just like she had been every day that he had been sick, caring for him like no one else could. Danny's children were also there to wish their father
one final goodbye.
Danny was born June 26, 1947, in Port Orange, Fl., but grew up and lived his entire life in the Chattanooga area. Those of you that knew him
certainly have many great stories and memories of his life.
Danny was a fireman for many years. He worked for the Chattanooga Fire Department. He also had many
entrepreneurial endeavors over the years; the most successful was Anita's Bird House. This was an exotic bird farm that Danny and Anita owned together. Those of you that
knew Danny certainly remember his birds.
As a fireman, Danny helped to establish the Fraternal Order of Firefighters. This is an organization that is still in
operation today. Danny was elected as president of the FOF, and he served in that position for many years.
Danny's true passion in life was helping people.
Whether it was saving someone from a burning building, giving an unfortunate child a home to live in, helping someone new to the country get on their feet, making sure all
of the kids in the community had Christmas presents, or just giving a begging homeless man money to eat on. These are the things that Danny did well.
He was the
most selfless person around. He always took care of everyone around him and neglected himself. He would have it no other way.
We all will miss you dearly, Danny!
Per Danny's request, no public service will be held.
The family would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers. We would especially like to thank
Hospice of Chattanooga for all of their kind work in Danny's final days.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Chattanooga Forgotten Child Fund.

BUSSARD, RAY - age 82 of Knoxville, died Wednesday night, September 22, 2010 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center from
a long bout with diabetes, which worsened over the past six months.
Coach Bussard led the University of Tennessee to a 1978 NCAA swimming championship and eight SEC titles. He produced NCAA and Olympic champions David
Edgar (early 1970s) and Matt Vogel (mid-70s). Edgar defeated Mark Spitz three consecutive years in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA championships.
Vogel won two golds and an NCAA title in the 100 butterfly in 1976. Coach Bussard was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the
Tennessee Swimming Hall of Fame (which he established in 1982), Tennessee and Virginia sports halls of fame, Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, Virginia
Sports Hall of Fame, College Swimming Coaches Hall of Fame, Bridgewater College Hall of Fame, and was NCAA coach of the year in 1972 and 1978. Yet he
never swam a race in competition. He was sprint coach for the U.S. team in the 1984 Olympics at Los Angeles, and coach U.S. teams in the 1979 Pan Am
Games and Pan Pacific Games.
He coached the Vols 21 seasons after a stellar career of coaching football, baseball, track and boys and girls basketball at six Virginia high schools;
and coaching football and track in two high schools in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A native of Highland County, Virginia, Coach Bussard met his wife to
be, Ruth Cauley, while teaching at Craigsville, VA, the first of five Virginia schools he coached. Coach had an and overall record of 252-20 (.926) in
21 seasons. His dual meet record of 178-20 (.899) included nine undefeated seasons in that period. He guided the program from an all-freshman team in
1968 to an NCAA championship in 10 years, and the Vols never finished out of the top four in the country.
Coach Bussard came to the University of Tennessee in the winter of 1966, saw the construction of the UT Aquatic Center in 1967, and in 1968, he put
the Vols on the road that would establish them as a national power. Ray coached the swim team at UT for 22 years and retired in 1989, the year the UT
Student Aquatic Center indoor pool was named for him. His tenure was the longest for a head coach at UT without interrupted service until Lady
Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt surpassed that achievement. The coach also became known for the added tradition he brought - including the wearing
of coonskin caps, emptying a bottle of their home water into an opponent's pool and featuring the Vol Timettes at home meets. Coach Bussard led
an all-freshmen squad to a second-place finish in the Southeastern Conference in 1968. The following year, the Vols broke Florida's 13-year streak of
SEC championships. Three years later in 1972, Bussard won another conference title and won the next six consecutively until 1979. Coach Bussard
received National Coach of the Year honors in 1972 and 1978, as well as being named the SEC Coach of the Year in 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978. He was
an assistant coach at the USA-USSR Dual Meet in 1978 and served as Meet Coordinator for the 1982 USA-USSR Dual Meet held at UT. In 1952 he won The
National All-around Track and Field Championships. Ray and Ruth Bussard established the Baton of Victory Award in 1987 to honor all men's and
women's coaches of NCAA championship teams.
Coach Bussard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth; daughters, Terry Hughes and her
husband, Ron of Norfolk, VA; Christy Bussard of Knoxville; Jackie Bussard Bertucci and her husband, Chris of Knoxville, and grandsons, Henry and
Stephen Bertucci of Knoxville.
